Storyboard

This is the storyboard which can present my idea and story clearly.

Synopsis

The two ostriches found a female ostrich singing under the tree and very interested her. One of male ostrich start to run and then the other ostrich stop him. They became angry and argue with each other. In the moment, the female ostrich was watching them. They decide do a completion and winner can get opportunity to aspire the female ostrich. Then they do exaggerated poses and ready to fighting each other. However, they change to dancing completion with music start. They do their best to attract the female ostrich, but she do not care about that. Then they start to fighting each other whose show their own’s power and try to attract the female ostrich.  But in the end, the female ostrich feel boring and leave.

Reference Record

Before i do a animation, i would like record the real reference by camera. Therefore, i went to flamingo park to take some videos be the reference. Unfortunately, there were just two ostriches in the park and looked listless. This is a clip of ostriches, just edited the useful information and clip together be a reference.

If i do the ostrich animation, i need very know anout the ostrich's bone structure and muscle movement. So I draw some detail ostrich bones and its body.

Idea Develop 

Based on research and exploration for dancing and fighting, i would like to do a half minute animation about animal with human personality. The ostrich is my first choice, because of appearance and character. When they stand up, their legs look like human standing posture. Thin and long legs are easy to make wonderful dance movements. And wings like human's arms, when they swing wings, beautiful feathers will followed jitter. It must be a brilliant picture.

  

Here are two 2D animated short films about ostriches.

The early Disney animated film about the ostrich. Prior to this, completely unable to imagine bulky ostrich can do ballet elegant movements. This creates a sharp contrast, make a contrast in visual and psycholog.

Animal style Gongfu

I want add some fighting plots in my story. So i searched some different Gongfu and want to find a suitable type adding to my story which it can be more exciting and intense.

There are some animal styles Gongfu presented the different features with different types Gongfu; for example, the Tiger Style Gongfu, Crane Style Gongfu and Snake Gongfu.

The Tiger Style Gongfu is a very poweful and violence.

PROPOSAL FOR FINAL PROJECT IN THE PRE-PRODUCTION STAGE

Abstract

One of the most significant current discussions in the field of 3D animation is how to make the character have more personality, in order to make the audience love this character. The past 10 years have seen increasingly rapid advances in the field of 3D character animation; however, creating an appealing character is essential for the animation film. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to determine the direction of 3D character animation research in my final project.

Introduction

In the final project, I will focus on the action in 3D character animation, so I chose dancing and fighting as my main exploration direction. I think dancing can present the graceful movement, but fighting is the other intense action for the performance, if they both appear together, it will be interesting and with stark contrast; however, for the choice of character, I would like to use animals instead of human beings for the action scenes. In fact, looking at companies such as Pixar and DreamWorks animation, they have successfully created a lot of impressive character roles, for example Toy Story, Kung Fu Panda and Puss in Boots. Specifically the completion clips of dancing and fighting in Puss in Boots gave me a lot of interest. The director enabled the cat to become successful, to attract everyone’s eye, which has human personality and reflected most vividly. Thus, I decided to take the ostrich as my protagonist after my repeated exploration.

Methodology:

The research will be carried out in four phases (pre-production stage):

1.       Search the film or video resources, which are famous for dancing and fighting, analyze the specific movements of character (a week)

2.       Develop a short story and explore the different possible ending. There are contradictions and conflicts between the characters (a week).

3.       Search the relative reference, include dancing and fighting, which could use in story and shoot it (3 weeks).

4.       Design main characters and draw a storyboard (2 weeks).

Conclusion

About my final project, which is the sum of the past year I have learned, and I want present a professional level of work. So I will do a lot of research and make an adequate preparation in the pre-production stage.

If mention of Bollywood Movies, what would you think, dance! Yes.  A beautiful dance scene is the most important feature of Bollywood films. Bollywood dancing often make audience very excited. In the course of the dance, people express their inner feelings  by dancing. for example, they will have some dialogues and actions to make the audience understand the dance meaning. So, I hope my story can join Bollywood dance elements that can narrative through dancing.

Pre - Production Stage : Pole Dancing

Pole Dancing is a form of performance art, historically associated with strip clubs and dance clubs, which combines dance and acrobatics centered around a vertical pole. This art form has recently gained popularity as a form of fitness and mainstream entertainment, practiced by many enthusiasts in gyms and in dedicated dance studios. A wide range of amateur and professional competitions are held in many countries around the world.

Actually, i want to add a period of pole dancing into my story. It's must be very funny and excited for my character. My main character are two male animals and a female animal. I want that two male animal can fighting by dancing to attract the female animal. The one of scene that they will show their specialty by pole dancing. I think it should be interesting and funny. So, i search three pole dancing for the reference.

The dancing performance in film ' Toy story 3 '

Just search some highlights of animation about toy story 3.
I want to learn some exaggerated body language from that two clips.

Clips 1.

That was amazing dancing performance. Even this shot only spend 53s, but there has a lot of  actions and very complicated.I am really like the hip swing  when Buzz dancing, the detail  make the character with more personality. In this clips, Buzz want fall in love with the girl, so he show more of his excitement when he dancing for girl. The timing was being good controlled in this clips. 

Clips 2.

This is a period of pas de deux. Finally, the girl accepted the love from Buzz. So, this dance is very cheerful and passion. The action and movement also difficult and complicated. It's hard to make the two people dancing like this period. 

The different performance

The work: Mime Animation

I clip the performance of Mime before i do the Mime animation. Because the time of animation should limited in 30 seconds. Besides, make sure the audience could understand what going on in scene. I divided  into three steps.

Step1: A man is walking dog in the park with good mood. He love his dog so much. The dog was a naughty dog, he always pull master go anywhere. The dog stopped and have a rest after walking tired. Then the man squatted and caressing the dog's body.

Step2: The dog was guided by a man to go to the direction of the right hand side. But the dog motionless no matter the man how to pulling leash. 

Step3: Suddenly，the dog start to move, running in the opposite direction. The man grabbed the leash to stop dog run. After a tough pull, the man was pulled outside of the shots by dog.

The blocking of Mime animation

This is the blocking of Mime animation. In the process of production, I use a moving box instead dog in the scene. It's easy to do animation and be a reference. There can be more convenient and intuitive. Through the blocking, I need to improve in some places.







Need improve:
1. This man walking too stiff and too mechanical.
2. The man need more reflection when dog pulling leash.
3. Some actions should be more exaggerated.

The breakdown of Mime animation
This is the breakdown of Mime animation. I was change a lot of details after tutorial. The walking looks nature and adds more reflections between man and dog; however, i changed some normal poses be more exaggerated. For example, the man pulled leash very hard in the ending of animation. Although the breakdown looks better than last time, but also need change a lot be better.

Need improve:
1. The walking should be more nature and relax, especially the movement of feet and legs.
2. Delay the thinking time before squatting.
3. Keeping the center of gravity when he cornering.  
4. Pay more attention in hands movement, especially fingers.
5. The hand raised too high, should put hands lower to match the dog size.

The final Mime animation
This is the final render animation. I adjusted the lighting and material for this mime animation. I want the movement of the man looks more real with performative. So i made the background be a small theatre. I am try to change some problems from breakdown, and now here presented the final effect. I hope tutor and friends could give me some feedbacks to make this mime be more perfect.
